This is the Apple app that comes by default on all their devices. Not a radically different app, though, if iOS and macOS are enough for you. It also offers inline tags and nested tags, which give a bit more control to organize your notes. It also gives you more control to format notes and add some rich content like images. Bearīear’s design is a lot more polished. It’s not for you if you want to add more than text to your notes or if you want inline tags. You have minimal distractions due to a minimal set of features, and it works across all platforms. They diverge quite a bit in how to organize the notes you took and how to integrate with other apps and tools.įrom the simplest to the most complex in this list, here’s what I like: Simplenote AppĪlthough they already cover quite a spectrum from the ultra-focused Simplenote, to the much more convoluted Evernote, at the core, these apps do only one thing: they allow you to take notes. I don’t think my point of view will be biased because of that, but I prefer to be upfront. I used these five apps for various lengths of time until a new generation came up a few years ago, but I still find them valuable today, and for some of us, they may even still be what’s best.ĭisclaimer: Automattic, the company that employs me, owns Simplenote.
